Another sign of allergies in dogs is sneezing. It's not unusual for a dog to sneeze on occasion, but if you're noticing that your dog is sneezing several times per hour or more, they probably have allergies. Some dogs also experience red, watery, and itchy eyes when they come into contact with their allergen.
How Vets Treat Allergies
One of the first things a vet will typically do is figure out what your dog is allergic to. Sometimes, this can be done by the process of elimination. For instance, they may recommend changing foods, and if your dog's allergy symptoms go away, this means they were allergic to their food. A vet can also perform an allergy test. Your vet can also prescribe an antihistamine medication for your dog. These medications work by counteracting the effects of histamines, which are substances your dog's body releases when exposed to an allergen. By counteracting histamines, an antihistamine is able to control allergy symptoms including sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.
In some cases, your dog may also need a corticosteroid medication. These meds work by reducing inflammation. They are often recommended for dogs who have really severe allergy symptoms.
